Winter Skin Solutions
It’s fall in Chicago – a wonderful time of the year, especially when the Cubs are doing as well as they are! But one thing we can all be sure of is that seemingly overnight, fall will turn into winter. Dry weather, whipping winds, and chilling cold temperatures and wreak havoc on your skin. Add dry air in our homes as the heat turns on and hot showers to warm us up – it’s a perfect storm for dry, uncomfortable skin.
But you needn’t join the ranks of the ruddy cheeked and flaky skin masses this winter. Here are a few tips to keep your skin healthy and happy during Chicago’s harsh winter months:
> Get a good moisturizer for your face and your whole body. And don’t be fooled by a big price tag – those aren’t always the best choices. In fact, some of our patients love the silky feel of coconut or almond oil on their skin. Contrary to popular belief, these oils won’t clog your facial pores, so use them all over – especially after bathing and washing and before bed. Your skin loses a surprising amount of moisture during the night!
> Make sure you get a daily dose of nutritional “healthy fats.” These include things like olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fish. Healthy fats help support skin health year-round, but are especially important in the winter months
> Stay hydrated! While this is important year-round, many people leave off drinking water during the winter months in exchange for warm drinks like coffee and caffeinated tea. If you don’t enjoy drinking room temperature water, try to get at least a cup or two of herbal (decaf!) tea in a day.
> Finally, remember that no matter what time of year it is, even if you feel like you haven’t seen the sun in days, UV rays are still getting to your skin so its important to wear sunscreen every day. Women now have a variety of choices of foundation and base makeup with sunscreen added so there’s no excuse not to protect your skin.
