Facial fillers are materials that are placed under the skin to fill and replace empty areas of the skin. This reduces wrinkles and enhances facial structures.
How do we do fillers?
First you will come to clinic for a facial analysis. We will have a discussion with the patient. Often times Dr. Memar and Dr. Caughlin will both give their aesthetic opinions. This multidisciplinary approach is unique to our practice. Essentially every patient has access to both a dermatologic cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. We are here to please.
After facial analysis and discussion we will talk about the options for synthetic fillers. There are risks and benefits to each so we will make sure each patient has the information needed. We currently offer essentially every filler.
Our nurses will apply some numbing cream to numb the topical area. We have recently moved to the use of cannulas for fillers. We still have the option of needle injection but prefer cannulas for three main reasons.
- Cannulas have been proven to have less bruising.
- They have less of a risks of vascular compromise and complications
- There is less pain and swelling because the end of the cannula is blunt and not sharp (less damage to blood vessels and surrounding tissues) and only requires one site of entry.
After the numbing cream has had time to set in a small amount of lidocaine is injected into the cannula site to make the filler injection completely painless!
The cannula allows the surgeons to place the filler into precise locations. For example: around the eyes it is placed just below the orbicularis oculi muscle, for the lips it is placed just below the dermis, for the nasolabial (cheek) folds it is placed deep to the dermis and sometimes onto the bone to lift those soft tissues.
There is minimal bleeding with the injection and only one site of entry so very little risks of any marks.
