Fat Transfer Procedure

If we had a nickel for every time we’ve heard a woman say, “if only I could move the fat from my butt into my breasts!” we’d be long since retired!  In fact, it is now entirely possible to remove fat from your rear end (or hips or any other fatty area of your body) and use it to enhance your breasts or other areas of your body in need of “plumping.” This process is called a fat transfer or fat transplantation.

Where can fat be injected?

Fat from your own body can be injected nearly anywhere you’d like to see more fullness. Some of the most popular sites for injection are:

Is fat transplantation safe?

Yes! In fact, fat transplantation is one of the safest and most effective ways of enhancing your body shape and appearance because we are using your own body material. Because fat transplantation uses your own body fat, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection at the injection site.  And, since natural and you own fat it’s also going to last much longer than other (un-natural) injections (botox/restylane/juvederm/volume etc).

Who is the best candidate for fat transplantation?

Almost anyone who has excess fat in one area and wants to see more fullness in another area is a good candidate for a fat transfer. In some cases, you may want more fullness in an area than you have fat available. In those cases, fat transfer will either be used in conjunction with another procedure or your doctor will suggest an alternate way to enhance your body shape.

What are the benefits of fat transfer?

Aside from the safety of fat transplantation, fat transfer also gives you a sort of “two-for-one deal” – we reduce the fat in one area of your body where there is too much of it and increase it in the area you want it. For that reason, fat transfers are often done as part of a larger set of procedures, often including liposuction or other fat removal procedures.

Why should I consider having a fat transfer done?

As we age, many of us notice that areas like our cheeks begin to take on a hollow look. This is primarily because of facial tissue loss in that area. At Dermatologic Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, our surgeons can remove fat from a fattier area, such as your double chin or bra fat or love handles, and transfer it into the hollows of your cheeks, giving you a fuller, younger facial look. This procedure also works for deep wrinkles and sagging skin.

Why Body Fat Transfer instead of another body shaping technique?

  • Almost no visible linear scar
  • No  allergic reaction to your own fat
  • Procedure is comfortable and safe
  • Quick recovery time
  • Results are natural looking
  • Lasts years and the fat that takes will stay as long as it would have stayed from where it was taken
  • Cost-effective when combined with another procedure

Reasons You Might Want to Pursue Fat Transplantation

  • Normal Aging

As we age, our face and body show it. Some parts of the body start accumulating fat while others start losing fat. With fat transplantation, you can right the wrong, by moving the fat from the unwanted area back to the wanted area. This way, you turn back the hands of time.

  • Trauma

Areas that have been traumatized, like wounds from shot guns, fights, injuries, etc that have left indentations in the face or body can be filled using your own fat.

  • Acne & Chicken Pox Scarring

Indentations on the face and body from injuries like acne scars or scars from viral infections can be raised and filled using your own fat. The results are long lasting.

  • HIV Lipodystrophy

HIV or the medications for HIV can cause loss of volume from the face. Your own fat is an excellent source of replenishing that lost tissue.

How Fat Transplantation Can Help

Also known as fat transfer, fat injection, and fat cell transplantation, fat transfer can lessen or even eradicate the visual results of many aesthetic conditions.

How does fat transplantation help? Fat transfer is a very minimally invasive procedure and does not require general anesthesia. We use a local Klein’s tumescent anesthetic in the areas where we plan to remove and inject the fat. Using a very small canulla, we remove the fat from the identified area. We then isolate and clean the fat cells. When they are prepared, we then inject them into the targeted areas.

The surgeon who injects the fat will carefully place tunnels of fat in the injection site to create contouring. The fat will take root after a few months and stay in place once engrafted. Meanwhile, local anesthetic wears off relatively quickly and allows for you to return to your normal life, generally without a visible linear scar.

At Dermatologic Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, Dr. Memar performs fat injections for Chicago-area patients. The procedure can reshape your face, provide definition to cheeks and chin, and help to correct facial volume loss. Many patients opt to use their own fat to plump their facial features because it is all natural and comes from your own body so there is no chance of an adverse allergic reaction, as can happen with some synthetic injectables. Reverse the signs of aging and turn back the hands of time with your own fat. I call this empowerment.

Where Can Fat Be Taken From?

Fat can be taken from almost anywhere on your body with fatty deposits: Abdomen, love handles, upper back, bra fat, double chin, thighs, buttocks, arms, etc.

How Long Does Transplanted Fat Last?

Transplanted fat can last for many years, which is substantially longer than most synthetic injectables. The fat that takes and engrafts will survive as long as it would have in the area it was taken from. For example, if the fat was taken from your love handles, the fat will survive as long as it would have if it was not removed. That is why we harvest fat from resistant areas and areas that the fat stays. This concept is called donor dominance. The fat of the transplanted fat will follow the genetics of the fat cell and not the new area. So if the fat in the love handle was going to survive for 10 years or more, then that is how long it will survive when transplanted to the face.

Can Any Body Part Receive Fat Transplantation?

In addition to your cheeks, temples, jaw, and chin, breasts, buttocks, hips, calf, fat transplantation often work well to disguise the signs of aging on one’s hands. But, it doesn’t always work well on every body part. The more blood supply a body part has, the better the fat survives. That is why fat transplantation works well on the face. At Dermatologic Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, our surgeon will consult with you to decide how fat transplantation can help you look and feel younger.
