Submental and Buccal Fat Removal Chicago
The chin and cheek are focus points of facial assessment. Many patients have a small submental (under the chin) fat pad that can give an aged and unflattering appearance, especially on the lateral view. This can be corrected with a couple different techniques from injectables (kybella) to liposuction which can sculpt these areas.
There are typically two complaints people have with their cheeks. # 1 patients often wish they had higher more prominent cheek bones. We can correct this with injectable fillers or implants.
The second thing patients often ask us is if we can give the appearance of a skinnier lower third of the face. This can be accomplished by buccal (cheek) fat pad removal.
Goals of Surgery: The goal of buccal fat pad removal is to give that narrowed appearance to the lower third of the face. This allows the mid-face to have a smooth and harmonious transition to the lower face which results in a youthful look. If you suck in your cheeks you can get an idea of what this procedure can offer. All of these procedures are performed in clinic with minimal downtime.
Buccal fat excision is performed in clinic. A small incision is made on each side of the inside of the cheek. The procedures takes about 20 minutes per side. The sutures are absorbable and do not require removal in clinic. The patient can be fully awake or have some oral sedation which is dependent on patient preference.
The postoperative course begins with some swelling. So at first the cheeks will be more swollen and larger than preoperatively. By the two week mark you will notice some narrowing and by the 1-month mark, it should be significantly narrowed.
Adjunct procedures: To make the results even more noticeable and to refine facial shape into the more aesthetically pleasing heart shape, the auto-fat transfer is often performed in conjunction with this procedure. The goal is to augment the upper third of the face. In particular, many patients benefit from creating a more defined malar (cheek bone) prominence .
